Based on the book ‘Scott and Amundsen’ by Roland Huntford.
Scott and Amundsen- both wanted to be first to the Pole. One of them won. The other became a hero.
Depicting in parallel (for the first time on screen) the attempts by both men to reach the South Pole, The Last Place on Earth powerfully explores issues of leadership, highlighting, too, the peculiarly British love of Glorious Failure.
Castigated on first appearance for 'Shaming Captain Scott' (The Daily Mail) and 'roundly condemned' by the Director of the Royal Geographical Society, the series went on to achieve international acclaim with no less than 3 screenings on US TV's prestigious Masterpiece Theatre. It continues to sell internationally.
